Spring for Charity 2011

Please head on over to springforcharity.blogspot.com!!!  We had another great successful year and so happy and thrilled with the support we received from friends, clients, and referrals!  We seriously live in the best city!  I couldn’t be more happy with how giving and supportive our community is!  (I don’t think it hurt to have some cute chicks  and a bunny and bribe them with a picture of their child!)

Spring for Charity 2011

This is one, no this IS my favorite event of the whole year.  I have to be honest with you… I love animals, and I love kids, but when someone asks me to photograph their kids with the family pet, I am usually a little bit less than thrilled.  Animals and toddlers are a definite recipe for disaster.  Yet on this one occasion, it is almost all smiles… a few tears, but always fun, real an fantastic reactions with the baby chicks.  The sessions are quick, fast, and kids just love meeting our little friends.  Mom (and even dad) get excited about a cute spring photo, and the grandkids just moved up a spot in grandma’s will.  (Not that they weren’t already on the top of the list as it was!)

But the best part of the whole event, is the proceeds go to charity!  We donate $50 from every session to our chosen charity.  It really doesn’t get better than that.  Seriously.  Everyone wins.  (Well… maybe not the baby chicks…  lots of love and squeezes never hurt anyone, right?)

This year we asked our clients to help us select one of their favorite charities and are proud to have chosen Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  Once you read Sierra’s story below, you will see why this was such an easy choice for us!

It seems like yesterday when my whole life changed, but really I can’t even remember that time.  It was March 25, 2000, that I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.  I was four years old and the only thing that I can remember from the whole experience is the hospital and shots!  A lot of shots.  I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have to worry about my blood sugar or what I was eating and I can’t ever remember what it was like to not have a needle with me 24/7.  So, here I am today, 15 years old, and all I know is that I have had diabetes my whole life, or so it seems.

I am very lucky, I have done both shots and worn an insulin pump. An insulin pump does not take away the 10-15 finger pokes I do everyday, but it takes away 3-5 shots a day. It works really well and I am grateful for modern technology. Shots are a little more stressful, you have to give yourself insulin every time you eat and then at bed and do all the finger pokes to check your levels. The pump, insulin, and injections are great; however, they are not a cure. I worry about heart and kidney disease, blindness, nerve damage, and amputation. More than that my family and I worry that my blood sugar might go low and I will have a seizure or that my blood sugar might go high and I could slip into a coma. I spend more time in the Doctor’s office than the average teenager, having tests done, making sure I am in good health (because I get sick more often than others and stay sick for longer periods of time) and changing my daily regimen as I grow and get older. I am thankful to Dr. Swinyard who has taken care of me since that Saturday morning when I was taken to the hospital with my diagnosis.

Diabetes is a chronic, debilitating disease affecting every organ system. There are two major types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. Staggering statistics show that nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes (8.3 percent of the population) and in the U.S., a new case of diabetes is diagnosed every 30 seconds; more than 1.9 million people are diagnosed each year.

Diabetes kills one American every three minutes and is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Life expectancy for people with diabetes has historically been shortened by an average of seven to 10 years, and the risk of death for people with diabetes is about double that of people of similar age without diabetes.

I am part of that statistic and your support will enable a better future for myself and others living with this disease. I watch others get diagnosed and I watch families go through what my family has gone through and would love to find a cure for diabetes. THANK YOU for taking the time to learn more about Type 1 diabetes and the millions of people it effects each year.

XO!

Sierra

SHE - Sharing Healthy Experiences

poster

On March 27th, I volunteered to participate in this wonderful event - SHE.

This is what their website says about the event:

The Purpose of the SHE Forum

To create awareness and to educate girls and their parents about RA and expanding their opportunities. The day is shared with their parents to learn about relational aggression, self-image, connective relationships, and enlightened parenting.

The research based interactive workshops will engage participants as they explore these age appropriate topics.

  • Personal safety and relational aggression strategies presented by local community outreach agencies
  • Keeping your hair and skin healthy with expert advice from stylist and skin care professionals
  • Dressing your best with body image and fashion awareness from local fashion experts
  • Nutrition and quick simple workouts for busy teens with fitness professionals.
  • Fun! Fun! Fun, and learning you will take with you and use rest of your life.

I loved the idea to participate in something to help young girls (5th-8th grade) develop a positive idea about self-image.  I think girls get such an unrealistic portrayal of beauty from the media and I think it is important at this impressionable age to help teach girls about individual beauty.  LaTricia and I spent the afternoon down at Ingleside Middle School creating some quick headshots of each girl to show them how beautiful each one is.  We called it  “CELEBRATE YOU!”  Beauty begins with the confidence and the ability to love you for you!  Each participant received a complimentary $50 credit towards a unique photography session where we will photograph them and let their true personality shine through during a fun, on-location photography session.  Each participant will also be able to download a free souvenir image with the “SHE” and “Marriott Photography” overlays like here:

Spring for Charity 2010

Last week we completed our first two days of this amazing charity event and want to send a HUGE thank you to all the families involved!!!  We were able to raise $500 for New Covenant Lutheran Church and Preschool.  It is especially humbling during these “hard economic times” (wow, I hate using that cliche but honestly, it is the only way to say it), that we had so many people jump on board to support a local school and church to help benefit the children of our community.

The event itself is always a blast!  I can’t get enough of watching the kids react to these baby chicks.  Their reactions are so real and unscripted and just too cute!  A big thank you to Jennifer Garbett, my amazing friend and fellow photographer that teams up to make this event possible, and my mom and sister that help pull off the dirty (yes, dirty - we’re talking toddlers and baby chicks here) work to make this event successful!

Here’s a sneak peak of some of the children that participated.  To view all of the images, click here and use the password 15080.

She seriously was sooooo calm and somehow transferred that energy to the little chick.  It sat there on her hand for several minutes!  I was amazed at how gentle she was!!!

And then you photograph the boys… and well, calm, gentle, and boys just don’t usually go together. He actually was quite careful… I promise no chicks were hurt during these photo sessions… but I got a kick out of the way boys handled the chicks and the way the girls did…

Jennifer Garbett — Oh my goodness, the cuteness is out of control. So many of these are my favorites! I'm excited to continue to add to our selection of great images to market with in the future. Great job...I can't wait to hear the reaction from all the parents.   ( March 12, 2010 @ 12:51 am )
