Cruise - Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Ahhh… the next destination… another BEAUTIFUL country, Jamaica.  Again, loved the lush hills and beautiful clear water.  Here’s a view of the port from our ship:

We had another amazing day full of firsts for us… it started here:

(And yes, that little blue sign says please do not climb the falls.)  But hey, no problem, mon!

We started the morning out swimming with some dolphins.  Let me tell you… the water was FREEZING!  OK, it was like 78, but that was too cold for me.  It took a minute for me to get adjusted, but I managed, and really enjoyed swimming with these guys.  They are strong and smart animals… and have been trained to have quite the sense of humor!

If I knew what was coming next, I might have spent the day with the dolphins.  I’m not so sure if the next few animals were quite as fun to hang out with:

(I can’t believe I am actually posting that terribly unflattering picture of me, but for goodness sake’s, I’m holding a SNAKE.  Not holding, letting it wrap itself around me.  This deserves some applause ladies and gentlemen.  I better be getting points from my sons in the future about this one!)

jamaica107

jamaica109

Just in case anyone is confused, that’s not Mike.  But, I think it might have been if they weren’t asking $200 for the OPPORTUNITY to hold a shark and HAND feed it live fish.  Funny thing is, I think I totally would have done it!

Next we headed to Dunn’s River Falls to hike UP the 600′ waterfall.  I learned it is a famous location for a James Bond movie - Dr. No.  I honestly have no clue what the scene was, but Mike tried to get me to re-enact it by walking out of the waterfall.  Ha ha!  Apparently I wasn’t as sexy as a Bond girl because all he could say was, I think you need the white bikini to make it work!  Thanks honey.  I just climbed a freakin’ waterfall… I wasn’t going for sexy!

The falls were amazing, though.  I think this was our very favorite thing the entire week.  It was absolutely beautiful, and so fun to climb a waterfall!  We climbed the first time with a guide - a Jamaican guide, which made it quite fun.  Then we went back again to climb on our own and explore some of the little pools and little falls.

We had a few minutes to spare on our way back to the ship, so stopped by a souvenir shop where we found the perfect t-shirts for our boys…

“Jamaica me crazy.”

Jen Garbett — HOLY CRAP! A snake crawling on you? Yeah, huge props! HUGE! And you look awesome! Can't wait for more. I was also wondering if you picked up one of those shirts for Dawson...we need one.   ( May 29, 2009 @ 12:04 am )

Mandy — Yes, on the waterfall. Yes, on the swimming with dolphins. Big fat NO on the snake!!!! No, no, no!!! Looks like lots of fun. Wish we could have gone. I still would have passed on the snake though. :)   ( May 29, 2009 @ 12:13 am )

Christine — That black dude is super hot. I like.   ( May 29, 2009 @ 1:57 am )

Andrea — I haven't even had breakfast yet and I already had to look at a snake. I don't do snakes! As a mom of boys, yes it will bump your cool factor. I did last year in San Diego and I will use it and constantly remind them of my "cool factor" status if I have to!   ( May 29, 2009 @ 9:30 am )

Anne — OMG!!! I can't believe you let a snake crawl on you. I have seen two in the last couple weeks while I have been driving and have freaked out. And I had a car protecting me!! Yuck!   ( May 29, 2009 @ 12:19 pm )

Kristina — Looks like such an amazing trip!   ( May 31, 2009 @ 12:42 pm )

10th Anniversary Cruise - Labadee, Haiti

I first have to give a HUGE shout out to my parents for so generously watching Parker, Ryan, and Kate for 10 days so Mike and I could do this!!!!

I don’t know who was more excited for this cruise - the kids or I.  Parker had a calendar in his bathroom that he was marking off until the day we left… because that meant he got to go to Nema and Hepa’s house and then to California.  I’m so grateful that my parents did this and made it such a fun week for my kids.  Mike and I truly enjoyed our get-away!  And although we missed them quite a bit, we LOVED every minute of relaxing, playing, and only being responsible for ourselves.  Wow… what a treat!

My amazing husband planned the whole thing.  He did so much research and it really paid off!  We were able to score some amazing deals and had a PERFECT time.  We ended up on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world.  In a later post, I will post pictures of all of the amazing things the cruise ship had to offer.  We went all out on a high-adventure cruise… zip lines, scuba diving, parasailing, rock climbing, swimming with dolphins, climbing waterfalls, kayaking, etc.  Today, I’ll share our first port of call… Labadee, Haiti.

I thought Haiti was BEAUTIFUL!  I loved the rich green hills and the clear blue water.  I only had my point and shoot camera with me this day, and just did not get any great pictures to do this country justice!

This shot of the cruise ship was taken in Labadee, Haiti.  We were on top of  a “hill” about a mile away from the ship and yet it still shows off its ginormous size.  And yes, that is a real word.

This was on the way up to the “Dragon’s Breath”.  This beautiful tide pool had a rock formation that allowed water and air to surge in and out as the waves came in.  Each time the air would escape through the sand and rocks and would make a noise that sounded like a dragon breathing.

This was on top of the zip line… Mike getting strapped in for flight.  This zip line was 1/2 mile long and went across this “little” bay - right out over the water.  It is the world’s longest zip line over water.  I think Mike and I were most excited for this excursion.  Needless to say, it was quite a rush.  Mike had the job of video-taping the flight; and um, he is soooo fired!  The video camera was not lost at sea, but he does need to learn the difference between “record” and “standby”. Oh well.  I suppose even the best of us still have minor faults.  I still love you, honey!

cruise0014

And here is the view from the top of the zip line platform.  The only disappointing thing about this was you could only go once!

img_5161

There were so many local merchants trying hard to sell their art and crafts.  We even heard one guy shout out… 1 penny… I give it to you for one penny.  Really?  So sad.

Lots more to come… if you want to see more.  Let me know by leaving a comment.  I don’t want to bore you with all the vacation pictures if no one is interested.

Railroad Park - Family Fun

I’m back to reality after a WONDERFUL 7-day cruise with my hubby… but before I allow myself to go through the images and make a post, I have to get caught up on some work.

I love this family… I have photographed these kids annually since they were little… it is so fun to see them grow!  This year, however, we finally got to take a few with the whole family!  Hooray!  I think I’m going to make sure this happens every year… they are such a great family to photograph!  Honestly, how could you not enjoy an evening at the Railroad Park wtih a train ride, ice cream, and lots of room to run and play?

Royal Palms - Shannon & Jeff

Vacation begins in just a few hours… but I REALLY wanted to get some of Shannon & Jeff’s images online before I left. Shannon is gorgeous… the wedding party was incredibly nice and fun. Jeff… well, LUCKY (OK, maybe you both are). All in all, the wedding was HOT! Literally.

Wow. I was definitely not expecting that heat wave on Saturday. The last 4 weeks of weddings have been gradually been getting warmer, but this came out of the blue. Props to the guests, bridal party, and of course, Jeff and Shannon, for enduring the heat to get some really killer images!

This may be one of my favorite images. As far as photography goes, this is pretty simple here… but it REALLY shows off Shannon’s incredible beauty. Rule #1 in portrait photography… make sure the image is FLATTERING to the client. Which generally means, no straight-on image. You should try to angle, tilt, shift a subject to accentuate their best features.  Even the smallest of people tend to look stiff, uncomfortable, and let’s face it, FAT in this pose. But not a rock-star super model. Oh, no… Miss, excuse me, Mrs. Shannon… she is drop dead STUNNING here.  Man, if it weren’t 110 degrees, I could have shot her all day!

A big thanks to my good friend (and AMAZING photographer), Jennifer Garbett for grabbing this shot:

I keep going back and forth on this image… one minute I’m in LOVE with it… the next, I’m not so sure.  There is just something about it that makes me stop and look twice.  And really… that’s what a good photograph should do.  Whether you love or hate it, it captures your attention.  What do you think?  Be honest.

Thanks LaTricia for this great reception shot!  These guys were so fun.  I just wanted to join them all on the dance floor… which was pretty amazing since I was so tired by this time.  It truly was an AMAZING day!  Congrats Shannon & Jeff.  Please check back in a week or two to view the full collection of images!
