Whirlwind of a Weekend

We are all still recovering from a whirlwind of a weekend this last week.

Saturday was the fun wedding of Kelley and John.  That morning, I got up worked on laundry, packing, and cleaning… left Mike alone with the kids with a list of to-do’s and spent the rest of the day with Kelley and John.  I got home about 12:30am and then Mike and I spent the next 1 1/2 hours packing the car and getting everything ready so we can be out the door first thing in the morning.  Yes, we decided, why not go to CA for Labor Day!?!?!  We have nothing else going on.  It’ll be fun.  Well, it was fun, but a little tiring.

We got up at 6am, and got everyone dressed and in the car by 7:45am.  Not bad.  We were shooting for 6:30, but the kids slept until 7.  (WHY?!?!!?  They are up at 5:45 every other day, but the one day we wanted them up early… )

Our 5 1/2 hour drive to San Diego took about 8 hours.  We decided that we should make the trip a little more interesting and start potty-training our 2 1/2 year old at the same time.  We were 4 days into and on a road trip.  Crazy, I know.  But, he surprisingly did GREAT!  Way to go RYAN!  No accidents.  Sure, several stops, but YEAH!  I think this is the first EASY thing with this child.  It’s been about time!

We got in, went to the beach for an hour.  Ran back to the hotel, changed, and headed down to Sea World for a few night shows.  (AWESOME by the way.  Way better than the daytime heat and crowds.  I definitely recommend that - and thanks Jen, for the recommendation.)

We got home around 11pm that night - HOPING - the kids would sleep in.  Nope.  6:45am and they were all up!  So, the day began with breakfast and then Mike taking the boys to the beach while I tried desperately to get Kate down for a nap.  (I finally did win).  Around 11:30 we have the boys showered and changed, the car loaded, checked out of the hotel, and on to Sea World for the day.  We had a blast!  But at 3:30 the boys were begging us to leave so they could take a nap.  HELLO… who are these kids?  Not my boys.  I can’t bribe them enough for a nap at home, but sure, once we spend a few hundred dollars to get to Sea World, then they want to nap.  Well FORGET IT!  We are getting our money’s worth!

4:30.  We give up.  Everyone is tired.  (Especially me) and we are all ready to crash while super-dad drives us back to AZ.

11:30 - home at last.  Kids go right to bed.  We unpack and veg for a minute on the couch.  Finally crashing ourselves about 1am.  My alarm goes off at 5:30 the next morning for a newborn shoot.

And the week begins…

Crazy?  Yes, I know.  But it was great fun, and Mike loved the impromptu random trip that I claim can’t be done with kids.  I suppose it is time to say I was wrong.  It is possible.  Tiring.  Not as easy, but possible.

All I had was the point and shoot camera and took only a couple pictures, but here they are:

Noelle — Looks like you had a fun vacation. Im headed there this thurs for a weekend getaway with the kids and a friend while Steve is in Colorado on a motorcycle trip. Not doing Sea World, just the beach and the zoo. Looking through old photos tonight. Cant sleep. Funny of us on that ski trip and the fair for my 18th bday. I need to scan them and email them. We thought we were so cute. Wow have times changed. By the way, nice hair. I haven't seen it long in forever. Talk soon   ( September 8, 2008 @ 3:31 am )

Julee — Ahhh...the best laid plans.... I'm so impressed by the spontaneity. I feel like we're light years away from that. Great pictures, too! Your point and shoot skills are WAY MORE amazing than mine! I need a class, please!   ( September 8, 2008 @ 3:51 pm )

Mandy — Too cute ... even with a point and shoot. That definitely was a whirlwind weekend. I remember doing that all the time before kids, but have yet to try it with them. Maybe someday, but first I'd rather have a vacation minus kids. Now that would be nice. :)   ( September 9, 2008 @ 6:20 pm )

Jen — "I only had my point and shoot camers" AKA, I got these AMAZING beach shots with my really crappy camera...my goodness girl, those put my beach shots to shame and I had my real camera!! Love the post can't say it sounds any fun though...you must have more energy than me, it just all sounded exhausting!! Ok, the sea world stuff was fun...I'll give you that!   ( September 9, 2008 @ 6:41 pm )

Different is Good.

OK, sometimes, different is just, well, um… different.  And I have got to admit, that I was a LITTLE skeptical at first.  I mean, I have been to over 300 weddings, and GLOW IN THE DARK and WEDDING have NEVER been used before in the same sentence, let alone as the THEME.

I was excited for something totally different, but wasn’t quite sure how they were going to pull it off.  But they did!  I suppose this is what you get when you cross a magician with a super-model.  (OK, I know that is not Kelley’s full time profession, but it seriously should be.  She is sooo tall, skinny, and glamourous.  Really wasn’t hard to get a good shot of her.

So, here’s my version of the 10 Top List - of what you don’t see at your everday wedding:

10. Amazing Monsoon Skies.  (OK, so you will see these at all the August weddings in AZ, but there aren’t too many booked this time of year, so it is a rare occurrence.)

9. Sparklers.  OK, so this one does get done a lot.  But, it is one of my favorite things, and since this is my post, I’m going to include it.  Besides… it fit the theme - glow in the dark!

8. Gift from father after father/daughter dance.  Here’s the background of the picture.  Kelley’s dad gave her this sweet engraved necklace at the end of the father/daughter dance.  This was THE teary moment for me during the wedding.  (yes, I usually do tear up at every wedding).  It was so sweet.  As soon as Kelley sat down after the dance, these girls ran over to her to check out her gift.  I have never seen a gift presented during this time of the night before.  It was really a nice touch.

7.  Puppy.  Tux.  Too cute not to include.

6. Seriously.  Cover of Buff Brides?  What do you think?  This is some serious dedication, Kelley!  I walked into the getting ready room just moments before the ceremony and saw this.  I mean, who does that? Apparently, this is soooo Kelley - and she claims a STRESS RELIEF.  Hmmm.  I go for chocolate.  Guess that is why I’m taking the pictures and she is the SUPER MODEL.

5. Fireworks.  The fireworks were cool enough on their own.  But, these guys were also a part of the action. Check them out loading the “shells” (oh shoot… I probably don’t have the terminology right.  This was my first up close and personal experience with so many explosives.)  There were wires everywhere.  I was so sure that I was going to trip something!  Luckily, we all made it out without a bang!  (ok, you know I had to throw in at least one or two puns.)  The most amazing part of this was Kelley having to climb over a fence, down a wall, and stomp across a cow pasture to get to the fireworks.  You see her dress.  She had a hard enough time sitting… I’m impressed with everything else.

4. Glow in the Dark Tables. This was such a great way to add some light into the ballroom.  It really filled the room with her wedding colors.

3.  Juggler.  They had a magician during the cocktail hour; juggler during the dinner… and, well, just wait.

2. Only a magician would find EVERYTHING but the garter under his bride’s dress.  Ha Ha!  Loved this.

1.  And the number one thing that you don’t see at your everyday wedding:

A WIZARD AS THE OFFICIANT.  That’s right folks.  Usually the only fire I see is from the unity candle.  But, according to this wizard… when there’s a spark between two people, it’s bound to ignite…

Now I just have to share some of the beautiful images of Kelley.  She truly was stunning, as you can see.

Lots of Fun Over Here

We are having fun these days with some fun and different twists on the normal.

Meet Sam.  I’ve been lucky to photograph some pretty amazing babies, but let me tell you, this Sam is the ALL-TIME BEST!  Such a perfect, happy model.  And, he looks so comfortable in his surroundings!  What do you think?  Nothing says BOY better than the rugged outdoors, right? Hmmm…

More coming soon. (I’m running on fumes today - I’ll explain later.)

Mandy — What a cutie! Jackson saw this and was really worried for the baby. He had a traumatic experience out there and now worries for anyone else in the same situation. I promised him that no baby was harmed in this photo shoot. Love the look!   ( September 9, 2008 @ 6:22 pm )
